Solar panels can supply some of the electricity used by a home EV charger. The best opportunity is when the car is plugged in during daylight and generation exceeds the electricity your home is already using.
Match charging to your routine
If the car is usually away during the day, compare daytime charging opportunities with the overnight tariff actually available for your Northern Ireland home. A solar-compatible charger may adjust charging to available surplus, but check its minimum charging level, grid top-up settings and compatibility with any home battery.
Specify the electrical work
Ask a qualified installer to assess parking access, cable routing, supply capacity and how the charger will share power with other appliances. Request a separate price for the charger and any electrical upgrades.
See our solar electricity savings guide before assuming all vehicle charging will be covered by your panels.
